Chapter Nine

Bobby seemed nervous to Sully, but Sully didn’t ask him why that was so. As they pulled into Bobby’s driveway, Sully having taken a cab to the club earlier, he couldn’t help but notice the way Bobby tensed up, his hands white-knuckling the steering wheel.

The scent of his arousal grew stronger, too, so Sully decided to wait and see what happened. They’d talked very little on the way over, and only about mundane things—Sully’s class schedule, his impression of his professors, which ones he thought would be easy on grading and so on—but they hadn’t talked about Bobby.

That was okay. Sully was going to know every little detail about the man. It might take a lifetime or more, but he’d do it.

“It’s not the fanciest place ever, but it’s home,” Bobby murmured as he shut off the car. Sully had expected to ride on the motorcycle. He’d been shocked to discover that Bobby drove an old beater truck. “Me and Josiah did some damage to this place, let me tell you. We’d get in some fights, and one of us would be knocked through a wall, or a window…or whatever surface got in the way. But you know, we always had each other’s back when we weren’t going for one another’s throats.” Bobby laughed, and the warm affection in his tone made Sully miss his sometimes obnoxious brother.

“I have a little brother, too, and he can be such a pest. I used to couldn’t wait to get away from him, but now I miss the little shit.”

Bobby patted his thigh before he unbuckled both of their seatbelts. “Yup. With Josiah in Colorado, all mated to your cousin, I don’t have anyone to give me any shit like a brother can. Everyone’s too scared of pissing off their future alpha, except Paava. He’ll poke at me until I snarl, but I can’t throw his ass through a wall.”

Sully got out at the same time Bobby did. He might have slammed his door a little harder than he’d meant to. “Paava, huh? You two are close, I take it.”

Bobby coughed then busted out laughing. “Aw, man, it’s the whole possessive shit, ain’t it?”

Sully loved that Texas twang that came out when Bobby was so unguarded. He forgot about being irritated over some guy who would never have Bobby. “Hey, it’s instinctive. You’d get all growly too if I had any friends for you to get growly about.”

Bobby quit laughing and cocked his head as he looked at Sully. “You have friends back in Colorado, don’t ya?”

Sully told himself he was not a total loser. “Not really, no. I always kept to myself. We lived outside of a small town, and were kind of outsiders no matter what. Being gay didn’t make me more inclined to get friendly with people, especially since I didn’t want to screw up and blurt out that I’m a shifter, too. I just found it easier to hang back, I guess.” He peeked at Bobby and sighed. “Don’t look all sorry for me.
